Ownroot vs. Grafted Roses

Q: What is the difference between an Ownroot and Grafted Rose plant?

A: Root system: Ownroot roses have a more developed root system with more hair roots for their size. The roots of an ownroot rose often look like twisted tree canes. Grafted roses have a round node at the base of the canes where the top and bottom stocks are fused together.

A: Establishment time: Ownroot roses take longer to establish than grafted roses.

A: Hardiness: Ownroot roses are generally hardier and can handle stress better than grafted roses.

A: Growth: Grafted roses perform faster in a garden.

A: Variety: Many florist and exhibition roses aren't vigorous enough to grow on their own, natural rootstock. Therefore, you will see certain varieties only offered as grafted plants.
